A workable mixed-SKU container plan starts with supplier-specific carton data, not a published container volume. For every SKU, collect the case pack, outer carton dimensions, gross weight, MOQ, packaging format, forecast demand and matching-lid ratio. Then calculate total CBM, CBM per 1,000 pieces, gross weight and inventory cover.
This matters because bagasse plates, bagasse bowls and bagasse clamshells do not use container space at the same rate. Their nesting depth, wall profile, compartments, lids and inner packing can change carton efficiency dramatically.
Use 20GP, 40GP and 40HQ specifications only for preliminary screening. Never divide nominal volume by carton CBM and call the result guaranteed. Confirm the plan through an actual carton arrangement, door-clearance and weight review, plus an agreed floor-loading or pallet pattern.
A lower FOB price per piece can still produce a higher delivered cost. Total SKU CBM = Carton CBM × Planned Number of Cartons
Total Pieces = Pieces per Carton × Planned Number of Cartons
These calculations create a common unit for comparing product categories.
Use this normalized measure:
CBM per 1,000 Pieces = Total SKU CBM ÷ Total Pieces × 1,000
It reveals the effect of product depth, nesting and case quantity. Compare like with like: define whether a tray-and-lid set counts as one sales unit or two components.
Add every carton’s gross weight and include pallets, straps, corner boards or dunnage. Run volume and weight checks together; a packaging change can alter both.
